No other name can boast a longer tradition in automotive history than Benz. In 1885, Karl Benz built the world's first vehicle powered by an internal-combustion engine - in essence, the world's first automobile. He continouslly improved his design, building larger and more powerful machines, including the world's first bus and the first van. By the turn of the century, Benz's name was synonymous with quality, innovation and superior craftmanship. Between the years 1910 and 1914, he produced a wide variety of cars, from the small 2-litre models to an incredible 22-litre 200 hp model - perhaps the largest engine ever placed in a private car. During this period, Benz automobiles were setting standards in racing competition throughout Europe and North America, while at the same time creating luxurious touring cars for private use. Among these was the elegant 1910 Benz Limited, a four-cylinder model with limousine coachwork, capable of cruising at 60 miles per hour. Now, this classic Benz has been replicated as a die-cast model by Matchbox Collectibles exclusively for The Models of Yesteryear: the 40th Anniversary Collection. |
